The Pursgloves of Eckington - [ECKT]

Eckington lies on coal and ironstone measures and this was exploited along with farming.  There is some evidence for Roman occupation nearby.  The parish church is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul.

The manufacture of iron and steel tools from the furnaces and grinding mills run by the Sitwell family of Renishaw Hall form the backbone of this town prosperity.  Coal mining was also a key industry in the later development of the town. A key local industry was nail making for sale to the joinery and ship building trades.
