The Pursgloves of Ilkeston

Founded in the 6th Century AD as "Elka's Tun" - the town of the local chieftain - by the River Erewash.  The Ilkeston Charter Fair was started in 1252 preceding the famous Nottingham Goose Fair.

Quarrying has been a major industry since roman times. More recently local coal mines have been a major employer.  Ilkeston Spa Baths were built in 1831 as a tourist attraction.  They closed in 1900.  Stanton Ironworks is a key employer in  the town until the last casting was made in 2007.  There is a significant textile industry in this area.
