The Pursgloves of Stoney Middleton - [STMT]

Situated at the foot of Middleton Dale, in a limestone landscape, the Romans mined lead here.  Middletune is literally 'Middle Farm' in Saxon - the stoney reference comes from the quarrying of limestone.  Stoke Brook is the local stream, flowing into the nearby River Derwent.

The village was abandoned following the black death, and repopulated with new stone houses to the west of the original village.  St. Martin's  church was built in the 15th Century by the Eyre family.  It was burned down in a fire in 1757 and only the tower survived.  The rebuild gave the church an unusual octagonal nave.

Cotton weaving, shoe making and lead mining were the local industry.
