The Pursgloves of Tibshelf - [TIBS]

The name of this village may be derived from the Anglo Saxon Tebba's Schele, meaning Tebba's Ridgeway settlement.  In Tudor times there were several open coal pits and shallow mines in this area.  The village has also been known for stocking making.  Tibshelf Bottom Colliery was open from 1868-1933 and Tibshelf Top Colliery was open from 1891 to 1939.

The parish church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, built in 1792 in its present form, though the parish registers date from 1627 and the church tower dates from 1492.
