The Pursgloves of Mansfield - [MANS]

Mansfield has a settlement in Roman times.  It is a market town on the road from Nottingham to Sheffield and its market charter was issued in 1227 AD. The 12th century church of St. Peter and St. Paul is central to the town.  St John's and St Mary's is situated on St John Street. (shown right)

With a predominantly agricultural economy, Mansfield was a coaching stop and a textile town.  Other industries developed including Mansfield Brewery, one of the largest independent breweries in the land.

Mansfield Colliery (Crown Farm) was opened in 1904 to mine coal, and eventually closed in 1988.
