The Pursgloves of Bodiam - [BODI]


This village is well documented from medieval times.  It is in the shadow of Bodium Castle, a large fortress built by the de Bodeham family, defending the port and main route from Battle to the north.

This area is well known for the growing of hops in the 19th and 20th centuries for beer making.  The church of St Giles dates to the 12th century.


John Pursglove [1693] married Mary Lancaster on 16 Aug 1724
   Mary Lancaster was also known as Mary Dicker, this may have been a previous maiden name.

Robert Pursglove [54] of Ashover married Elizabeth Heathfield on 8 Jan 1724
   Moved to Herstmonceaux to live
