The Pursgloves of Doncaster - [DONC]

Situated on the River Don, Doncaster is built around the site of a Roman Fort called Danum, dating from the 1st century AD.  This is associated with the old English word Castra (a fort) to give the town its modern name.  The tow charter was granted under Richard I in 1194 and the tow was granted Market status in 1248.

Doncaster was established as a trading town and became a centre of the coal industry during the 20th century.  It was also key in the production of munitions during the two world wars.  Agricultural equipment and horse racing are significant industries in the town.
