This village was recorded in Domesday as 'Ernulfestorp' - Earnwulf's farmstead of Scandinavian origin. Thjis area developed as an agricultural settlement and still maintains this industry today.  The village is now on the edge to the east of Doncaster.

In 1916, Markham Main Colliery shaft was sunk at Armthorpe to supply coal for the Great War.  This colliery closed in 1996 with an estimated reserve of 50 million tons of coal.  There are significant housing estates here, with their close proximity to Doncaster and the Robin Hood Airport, this has become an affluent area.
