The Pursgloves of Kirkleatham - [KKLM]

This village is situated on the River Tees Estuary between Middlesbrough and Redcar. Kirk Lythum is literally the church on a slope.  This was a small agricultural and ecclesiastical community.  At the end of the 17th century, the development of Alum Works heralded an expansion in the local population.

This site was a Viking burial ground in the 9th Century and the church of St Cuthbert's was established in Saxon times, being rebuilt in 1763.  The church has an interesting mausoleum added to the side of the Chancel.
