The Pursgloves of Penistone - [PENI]

Pennstun is a composite name from Welsh and Old English meaning high farmstead.  There is also a theory that it could be derived from Penning's settlement. In 1069 the settlement was razed to the ground by the Normans.

A new settlement received a Royal Charter in 1699 to hold a sheep market.  The Pennistone sheep was the local hardy breed.  This remained a small market town until the coming of the railways.  The economy is based on livestock and the Pennistone Show is a regional agricultural event.

St John the Baptist church has records from 1200 AD.
